Visu - Kerala's famous festival

About Vishu

Vishu is the first day of Malayalam month ‘Meda’. S Vishu is also called as Medha Vishu. The main things of Vishu day are Vishu Kani, Vishukaineetham, Vishubhalam, Vishupootu.

Vishukani: Malayalies make it ready Vishu khani before Vishu day. Because they are supposed to see first the Vishukhani, which is placed in front of Lord Krishna idol or photo. Vishukhani is the kerala traditional bowl called ‘Urali’ contains the rice, gold, kasavu mundu (traditional cloth of Kerala), silver, mirror , coins, cucumber, jackfruit, mango, coconut, Kanikonna (Indian Laburnum – flower in yellow colour) and banana.
Vishukaineetham: The elder of the family distributes the coins to the family members. Now a days people distributing the big big gifts instead of coins.
Vishubhalam: On this Vishu day ppeople think that Day and Night are having the same duration of 12 hrs. That is called Vishubhalam.
Vishupooty: On the Vishu day farmers start their new agricultural day, is called Vishupooty.
Vishu is auspicious day for Ayyappa devotees, because special poojas will be held in Sabarimala Ayyappa temple. Many devotees from Andhrapradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala will reach Sabarimala on this Vishu.
